Basic Wilderness Travel Introduction to Rock Climbing

Basic Wilderness Travel

Co-sponsored with the Seattle Hiking Committee.

Looking for an opportunity to make new friends, have a great time and learn some good mountain travel skills? The Basic Wilderness Travel Course provides an introduction to topics such as backcountry navigation, mountain weather, and conditioning for outdoor activities.

As a student in this class, you will develop outdoor skills that will help you enjoy hiking more, while providing a basis for other Mountaineers classes such as snowshoeing and scrambling. We keep the class size limited to 35 people, so classmates will have a chance to get to know each other.

The hikes included in this course will vary in challenge and in destination: expect the opportunity to sign up for easy rambles through mountain forests, along rivers, and up to sun-splashed alpine lakes. You will also have the chance to go on moderate and strenuous hikes that will challenge you physically while hiking to some of the smaller peaks in our beautiful Olympic and Cascade Mountains.

This course is usually offered in the spring of every year in April and May. It includes lectures and field trips held over the time of about 4 weeks.

You must be a member of The Mountaineers to register for the course. A course registration form will be printed in the back of the Seattle branch section of the Go Guide in early spring. Course fee: $45.00 (includes student handbook).
