June 5, Tue. - Book Club. The UTHRS Book Club meets at 7:30 on the first Tuesday of every month at a local cafe or member's home to discuss a different book. We read a variety of outdoors/travel narratives, as well as modern fiction. The upcoming selections are as follows: March 7: "A Woman's Passion for Travel," by Marybeth Bond, et al. June 9, Sat. - Hike : Little Si ( , USGS North Bend, , USGS Snoqualmie, ). Description: Join me on an easy, social hike on Saturday, June 9th at Little Si. This is a good hike for beginner hikers and new members. Meet at the Tibbetts Park and Ride (1675 Newport Wy NW) in Issaquah at 10 am. To get to the Park and Ride take exit 15 from I-90. Turn right (south) to the 3rd traffic light. Turn left on Newport Wy NW. Drive less than 1/2 block and turn right into the Tibbetts lot which is next to a ballfield. June 16-17, Sat.-Sun. - Backpack : Dewey Lakes Backpack ( , GT Bumping Lake-271, , GT Mt Rainier East-270, ). Description: If you're looking for a good way to wet your feet in the area of backpacking then this trip is for you. We will meet on Friday June 8 at 7PM (Seattle Clubhouse) to discuss group gear, packing, food, and equiptment. You will need the appropriate level of fitness and gear but this trip, and meeting, are designed to help round out those questions and skills that you might need answered. The location will probably change as we get closer and I can pinpoint conditions but will be an easy backpack for those who have minimal experience. Meet at 9:00 am at TBD . Last year I did this hike at the same time and it was HOT and lake was nice. So be prepared to swim if you have an interest. Expect a leisurely stay at the Lake in any event. July 13-15, Fri.-Sun. - Backpack : Shi Shi Beach / Point of Arches Backpack. Description: Photographic exploration of spectacular seastacks, arches, caves, and tidepools reaching out into the ocean from the Point of Arches. Potential for great sunsets. Camp on the beach at Point of Arches. Backpack: 4 mi. ea. way, min loss/gain. July 13-15, Fri-Sun Shi Shi Beach, Point of Arches Olympic National Park (E) 10 mi., no gain. Green Trails Map – Cape Flattery, WA – NO 98S. Shi Shi Beach is perhaps the most gorgeous beach in Washington State. Two miles of open curving beach are bounded on the south by a series of stunningly beautiful sea stacks, arches, caves, and tide pools reaching out into the ocean from the Point of Arches. At the Point of Arches (south end of Shi Shi Beach), a series of sea stacks and arches extend out from the point. Tantalizing tide pools are hidden amongst them; these teem with sea stars, sea anemones, and other sea life. July 13-15 will be some of the lowest tides of the year at -2.2 for optimal tide pooling. We will camp around Petroleum Creek about a half mile north of the Arches. Olympic National Park Wilderness limit on party size is 12. Previous backpacking experience or leader permission required. Hike Classifications:
Mountaineer hikes are classified in two ways. The difficulty level of the trail, and the pace at which the group will be t
Difficulty levels are:
- Easy (E): Up to 8 miles round trip, with up to 1200' of elevation gain. (Comparable to Little Si)
- Moderate (M): Up to 12 miles round trip, with 1200'-2500' of elevation gain.
- Strenuous (S): Up to 14 miles round trip, with 2500'-3500' of elevation gain. (Comparable to Mt. Si)
- Very Strenuous (VS): Over 14 miles round trip, and/or more than 3500' of elevation gain.
The Pace of the trip is defined as:
- Leisurely pace: The slowest pace trips. (More than 2 hrs. around Green Lake)
- Social pace: Less than 2 miles per hour. (Approximately 2 hrs. around Green Lake)
- Moderate pace: Approximately 2 miles per hour. (Approximately 1-1/2 hrs. around Green Lake)
- Fast pace: Greater than 2 miles per hour. (One hr. or less around Green Lake)
